A stereoscopic 360° VR film for Red Bull Cliff Diving in La Rochelle, created for Samsung Gear VR.
A 360° cliff-diving experience for Gear VR
Blank asked me to create a stereoscopic 360° film for Red Bull Cliff Diving in La Rochelle, designed for Samsung Gear VR. The goal was to give viewers the feeling of standing inside the event, close to the platform and the jump.
François-Côme du Boistesselin handled the shoot in La Rochelle, then worked with me on the modeling and camera mapping. Antonin Delboy animated the diver, and I handled the shading, lighting, rendering and compositing of the final stereoscopic image.
Stereoscopic 3D rendering
For the headset version, the film had to be rendered with the left and right eyes side by side. The camera offset between the two views created the depth sensation in VR, while the 360° projection meant every part of the environment had to hold up around the viewer.
