CGI Product Visuals, 3D product rendering · CGI packshots
CGI key visuals, packshots and product backgrounds for beauty and luxury brands, rendered at print resolution.
CGI product photography, also called 3D product rendering, means making product images in 3D instead of in a photo studio. The light, the angle and the background can all be changed without a new shoot.
I’ve made key visuals and CGI packshots for beauty and luxury brands, often from the same 3D scenes as their films.
Light that reads as photography
The goal is an image that reads as a real photograph. For Kate Spade's Chérie Je T'aime, I built the two hero visuals around the light, mixing natural daylight with studio lighting so the bottle reads as a real product, with realistic reflections and highlights. I modelled, lit, shaded and rendered the bottle.
For Lancôme's Idôle, the bottles were matched in 3D from the client's own photo shoot, each with its specific finish, from holographic and iridescent effects to soft gradients and gold interiors.
CGI packshots
Some briefs only need the product on a clean background. Balmain Beauty's Christmas key visuals included each fragrance on its own, rendered at 18K and delivered in RGB and CMYK for print and digital.
3D sets for real product shoots
A 3D background can also host a real photograph. For Lancôme's shopping-festival campaigns, I set the layout, camera and framing of every 3D set, and built 3D replicas of the products to match each angle, so the agency could shoot the real bottles to fit.
On Black Friday, each key visual came with and without the product, as a guide for the shoot.
From the film to print
Building the stills from the film's own scenes keeps a campaign consistent. For Biotherm Homme's Year of the Snake, we delivered the key visuals from 10K for digital up to 16K at 300 dpi for print.
I also designed the gift box from the same procedural pattern as the digital stadium, so the box and the campaign come from one system.
Sets for e-commerce
For Nike's FFF collection, I worked with Studio White on a 3D set for the e-commerce launch. The apparel and sneakers hang on thin wires between panes of glass and neon tubes.

Questions
CGI product photography or 3D product rendering?
They mean the same thing: a photoreal image of the product made in 3D instead of in a studio. You'll also hear CGI packshots, 3D product visuals or virtual photography. Once the product exists in 3D, any angle, light or background is possible without a new shoot.
What resolution can you deliver?
Whatever the media needs. Balmain's key visuals were rendered at 18K, Biotherm's went up to 16K at 300 dpi for print, with RGB and CMYK versions and layered files for recomposing.
Can the visuals match our real product exactly?
Yes. I build the product from its technical files or reference photos and match it against the real thing, down to the finish: for Lancôme's Idôle, every bottle's holographic, iridescent or gold treatment was matched from the client's photo shoot.
Can the same scenes give us a film too?
Yes, and that's often the best value: the key visuals, the packshots and the film can all come from one set of 3D scenes.
