Chinese New Year 2023
A 3D film for the SKII x White Rabbit limited edition bottle, blending 2D and 3D animation.
Overview
For Chinese New Year, SKII partnered with the candy brand White Rabbit on a limited edition bottle, and Leo Burnett and Prodigious brought me in to direct the 3D film that would run in SKII stores around the world. I did all the 3D animation, which drove the timing of the 2D. I animated a 3D sphere to lock the timing of the rabbit's jump, set the camera layout and movement, and animated the bottle, so Thomas Rietbergen had solid reference to build the 2D animation on and match it to the 3D exactly. I also handled the shading, lighting and compositing.
Key Shots and Challenges
In the film, the blue rabbit jumps onto the classic FTE bottle and transforms it into the limited edition White Rabbit design. The key shot was the transition from the rabbit printed on the label to the animated one, and it had to feel seamless. I kept the movement fluid so the 2D and 3D elements read as a single character.
Technical Aspects and Deliverables
The film had to work across every in-store setup, so I delivered it in many versions: horizontal and vertical, plus extra-wide layouts for 2, 3 or 4 combined screens. I also produced large prints, 150x150cm at 300dpi, for use in the SKII stores.
Social Media Versions
Working from the main film, I made two more versions for SKII x White Rabbit, built for the vertical format of social media.
