Sport Coach Virtual Avatar
3D animations for the TAG Heuer Connected smartwatch, a stylized virtual coach demonstrating 20 exercises.
An animated sport coach for the TAG Heuer smartwatch
TAG Heuer came to me for their Connected Calibre E4 smartwatch: a virtual sport coach performing 20 exercises, shown directly on the watch face. I did the creative direction and all the look dev, defining the look of the stylized character together with the TAG Heuer team.
Perfect loops
Every animation had to loop seamlessly to run on the watch. That went for the coach's movement and for all the abstract effects inside the animated textures.
Designing the virtual avatar
The avatar was the heart of the project, the main thing users would see on the watch face. I explored a range of stylized directions, playing with particles, abstract and organic forms, polygons and wireframe graphics.
The team chose a high-contrast black and white avatar with abstract shapes and light effects moving inside its body. It stayed distinctive and readable across all 20 exercises, and held up on the watch screen even in bright daylight.
Filming a real coach, animating the moves
We also cast and filmed a real sport coach to give the animation an accurate base. I prepared the shoot and captured the footage with our friends at Sonacom, building a library of real movements for each exercise. I animated some of the exercises in Cascadeur, keeping them true to the coach's real moves while closing each one into a perfect loop, and Pushpendra Sharma animated the others in Maya.
