LoL - Ruination Europe
Stylized 3D smoke VFX for League of Legends: eight films matching the game's magical mist over stock footage of European cities.
Concept
JK Groupe brought me in for eight teaser films for the League of Legends Ruination Europe campaign. The task was to match the look of the LoL magical mist and recreate it over stock footage of various European cities.
I developed the smoke's look in compositing to match the game's art direction: a glowing green tip that fades into the heavy black smoke of the Ruination style.
A tight turnaround
From brief to delivery, we had three weeks to make eight films across 40 shots. Every shot needed 3D smoke simulations, which take a lot of sim time, and before any sims we had to find, validate, track and model each one.
I directed and edited the films and handled the tracking and compositing, while Jérémy Reveniaud built the FX setup and ran the smoke simulations with Marine Gazel. With an efficient team and a responsive client, we delivered a film a day, live, as the campaign ran.
Process
Every shot went through the same process.
3D tracking and matchmoving
Here's some of the matchmoving work on the shots. I used 3D proxies of varying detail for the main buildings in almost every shot.
